May Stockist of the Month: My Sewing Box

Mother and daughter team Amy and Angela were inspired to launch their business by a lack of high quality fabric shops in their local area. Initially launched as an online business, they now also have a shop in Bournemouth and offer workshops. They are passionate about high quality materials and getting everyone around them involved in sewing, they love the infinite possibilities offered by quilting. We caught up with the dynamic duo to find out more.

Tell us about the history of your shop and the team?

We did our business a bit backwards, starting online and then getting a retail shop further down the line! Our business was born from not having many fabric shops locally, especially ones with good quality fabrics.

Whilst both finishing our degrees, Amy and Angela (the mother-daughter duo behind the business) decided to take a look at what was out there and give setting up our own little website a go. In the beginning we knew nothing at all about running a site but learnt as we went along! What’s always guided us is our passion for great quality design and materials, and lots of colour.

What do you offer that makes you stand out from other retailers?

One of our most unique offerings are our subscription boxes. We have been running our monthly fabric boxes for a couple of years now and love designing and creating these boxes of joy as much as our customers love opening them! Our subscribers love to receive a new surprise every month, especially as it all co-ordinates and can then be used to make a full project.

We very much have our own style of fabrics we like and many of our subscribers and customers have a similar taste so we are very lucky that they trust us to choose something wonderful and sometimes even push their boundaries a bit! We are also quite picky about our products and only choose items of a great quality, in terms of both design and materials.

What are you passionate about?

At the heart of our business is a desire to always use great quality materials for making. We have always felt that when you invest a lot of time and effort into making, you want something worthwhile and long-lasting at the end of it.

We’re also keen to encourage everyone around us to sew, whether it’s their first project, or their fiftieth! As a community, makers love to talk about their makes and share their inspiration and ideas, and we are no different. We’re always checking in on what our customers are making, sharing their photos and encouraging beginners and less confident sewists to just go for it!

How do you choose what you stock?

Mostly, it’s down to our personal taste – we only buy stuff we personally love or would want to use. Amy loves the quirkier prints whilst Angela loves bold colours, so between us we manage to mediate each other and also pick some fabrics that would appeal to different tastes than ours while still upholding a good standard of quality.

We also listen to recommendations from our customers about what they love and have had a good experience using. We want our customers to love them as much as we do!

What do you love about quilting?

The best thing about quilting is the array of colour and the sheer number of shapes and designs you can create! From artistic quilts to just pretty, cosy and practical ones, you can create them however you want for whatever purpose you want. Plus we love small quilting projects too like mug rugs and bags which can be done in a day.

It’s a hobby that gives you such a great opportunity to play with colour, style and design, three things that we love!

What project are you working on at the minute?

Aside from our own business (a full time project in itself!) we have been making up a little nursery quilt, giving ourselves plenty of time to get it done before any grandchildren come onto the scene! It’s our first experience using a panel for quilting and it’s just the most satisfying and easy-to-put-together project – no it’s not cheating! We do a lot of dressmaking projects too using our amazing array of quilting cottons, and we’ve just finished a pretty cotton sundress.

Are there any future plans you wish to share with us?

Just keep adding to our fabric addiction! If you think it gets any better when you own a shop’s worth of it, I’m afraid to tell you it’s exactly the same except you now buy it in larger quantities! We’re always working on improving our subscription boxes and one-off versions that we develop for gifts and the occasional treat to yourself.
