December Stockist of the Month: Serendipity

Situated in a beautiful and spacious premises in the heart of Bovey Tracey in Devon, Serendipity offer a wonderful range of fabrics for patchwork and quilting and for dressmaking as well as workshops and classes. Mother and daughter team Myriam and Sunny are always in tune when it comes to the fabrics they stock and love instilling their own passion for sewing and quilting into their customers and seeing their pride when they show off their finsihed projects. We caught up with this dynamic duo to find out more...

Tell us about the history of your shop and the team?
Myriam (Mum): I took over Serendipity in 2011 after working and teaching for the previous owners for 2 ½ years. When the shop moved back to Bovey Tracey in 2012, Sunny (daughter) joined me there. After a short while Sunny got the sewing bug too and we decided to start dressmaking classes in addition to our very popular Patchwork and Quilting courses and workshops. We have never looked back. Now we are right in the centre of the town and busier than ever.

What do you offer that makes you stand out from other retailers?
Besides our beautiful light, bright, spacious and airy premises, we are proud to offer a friendly, personalised and honest service to anyone who wanders into our shop. Our years of knowledge and expertise have turned complete novices into thoroughly experienced quilt addicts and our passion is evident in every project we do.

What are you passionate about?
Making Serendipity a success, a recognised name in the patchwork and quilting community but most of all, we are passionate about instilling our passions into our customers. We love seeing customers proudly parade their hard work after helping them find the perfect fabric combinations and teaching them the intricacies in our classes. Their excitement and glee make all the long days and sleepless nights worth it.

How do you choose what you stock?

The sales reps for the various fabric suppliers will tell you that we know exactly what we are looking for and get excited about and we are always in tune. There are certain fabrics that they know not to show us. They find it hilarious when we both say no at the same time when we are shown a certain type or colour range of fabric. Most of the time though, we have to make some seriously hard choices and head and heart have to battle it out.

What do you love about quilting?

We love every part of the patchwork and quilting process. From taking our time to find the perfect fabric, carefully cutting and sewing each block, to standing back and admiring the result and then of course the beautiful craft of quilting to finish it off. Most of all, we love seeing the excitement of our customers when they see the new project finished and telling them it will be a course or workshop soon.

What project are you working on at the minute?

We’re actually working on Christmas projects but for next year! Being a business, you have to have your Christmas projects done by summer so while we’re in the festive spirit, we thought to get ahead for next year. We’re also busy making samples for next year’s classes. Our new workshop brochure will be released in January and our customers are anxiously anticipating the new offerings.

Are there any future plans you wish to share with us?
We are looking forward to having a little break over Christmas when we can do some ‘personal’ sewing (we admit we’re addicted!) then starting the New Year with a bang. Our new workshop brochure will be released in January and we always like to coincide that with an Open Day. Our classes will start again in February and we are planning more coach trips to quilt shows next year.
