September Stockist of the Month: Sew Scrumptious Fabrics

Louise Horler set up the online shop Sew Scrumptious Fabrics to provide quirky, contemporary fabrics for the modern dressmaker and quilter.

Louise tells us how it all began, how she chooses her fabrics and much more.

Tell us about the history of your shop and the team?
Sew Scrumptious Fabrics was set up by me in 2013 when I realised that there was a gap in the market for quirky and contemporary cotton fabrics aimed at the modern dressmaker and quilter. I set up a website and blog and began sourcing the sort of fabrics that I loved using myself. The website was a huge success and we are now a team of three. Lel helps with packing up all of the orders and Rachel helps design new projects for the tutorials on our blog and the videos on our YouTube channel.
What do you offer that makes you stand out from other retailers?
We offer a huge range of quirky, modern designs and are adding new fabrics from the US and Japan as well as exciting new British designers weekly. We love fabric ourselves so really try to offer a first class service including reasonably priced and fast postage. We also try to keep our prices really competitive. We have built a huge crafting community around the business using social media and love sharing what our customers have made.
What are you passionate about?
Sewing! We love encouraging people to sew and have a blog and YouTube channel to encourage people to have a go at making things.  Lots of our tutorials are simple and aimed at children or beginners. Our Christmas Stocking tutorial has now been viewed over 124,000 times!
How do you choose what you stock?
I just go with the fabrics that I love in terms of design and what I think people will like. We specialise in bold, bright prints and prints with a retro feel. I also love finding quirky designs for children. We also listen to our customers and have recently added some jersey fabrics and coordinating prints.

What do you love about quilting?
I am only a beginner quilter but I love being able to play around with different shapes, colours and designs. My mum is a proper quilter and I love that the quilts that she has made for her family will be treasured forever. Quilting also teaches you patience!

What project are you working on at the minute?
I am currently trying to master dressmaking and am trying to find time to make myself some summer tops. I am also working on some new projects for the Sew Scrumptious blog.
Are there any future plans you wish to share with us?
Lots! We will be launching a new website over the next month or so with a new customer reward scheme for all our loyal customers. We are also hugely excited to be stocking the new Liberty Collection called ‘The English Garden’ as well as adding lots of new tutorials and videos to our blog and YouTube Channel.
