October Stockist of the Month: Poppy Patch

Having both discovered the wonderful world of patchwork at a Poppy Patch workshop, Mary and Sam loved it so much that they bought the shop!

Blessed with a wonderful rural location at a converted barn, Poppy Patch offer a treasure trove of 100% cotton fabrics and irresistible patterns and run a wide range of courses in the spacious workshop location above the shop.

Their latest fabrics include Liberty's The Orchard Garden and Clothworks' Guess How Much I Love You.

We spoke to Sam to find out more about Poppy Patch...

Tell us about the history of your shop and the team?

Poppy Patch has been in existence for over a decade after being started by two friends as a hobby which grew into a business. Sam and Mary took over nearly four years ago and have made their mark by specialising in Australian patterns, buttons, embroidery threads and a variety of fabrics.

Mary had been taught to sew by her Mum but had not tried Patchwork until 2013 where she found out what a fabulous hobby it is. Mary introduced her best friend Sam (who had never sewn before) to sewing that same year and Sam later took a patchwork beginner's course with Helen Spence at Poppy Patch - the same one that had got Mary hooked. Both fell in love with Poppy Patch and the art of patchwork and quilting so much so they bought the shop!!!

What do you offer that makes you stand out from other retailers?

We specialise in Australian patterns, holding a stock of nearly 1000. These include over twenty different ‘Block of the month’ patterns which we can kit. We also offer buttons and fabrics from Australian Lynette Anderson plus Australian Cottage Garden hand dyed variegated embroidery threads and Henry Glass designer fabrics by Australian designers Annie Downs and Gail Pan supplied by EQS. We have a wide selection of quality cotton quilting fabric and are also a Liberty stockist.

What are you passionate about?

Mary is passionate about “starting new projects”... but that does not mean she finishes them!
We are both very passionate about the Australian designers but both love craft, especially sewing where there are so many new techniques to learn. We are both lucky that we can take that empty seat on any course here at Poppy Patch.

How do you choose what you stock?

We buy what we love, as we believe if you do not love it you cannot sell it. Luckily, we do not always have the same taste so there is a good mix of fabrics in the shop.

What do you love about quilting?

We love the creativity of making a patchwork quilt. Despite been told at school we couldn’t draw, with patchwork you can create some stunning artwork that would make anyone proud.

What project are you working on at the minute?

Mary has a Grandson due any day so she is rushing to finish a cot quilt made from the new delivery from EQS, P&B's ‘Off to the Farm’ and a floor quilt using the Australian pattern by Claire Turpin. She has many projects on the go including a Liberty star quilt and a large cushion. Sam has a Liberty log cabin quilt waiting to be cut but is working on an ongoing hexagon quilt, framing some embroideries to make into a quilt and an applique quilt by Janet Clare. Also as Sam loves to incorporate embroideries into her quilts and she is making the Block of the Month by Australian Leanne’s House.

Are there any future plans you wish to share with us?

There are many new courses for next year with workshops already planned every month up to October 2019 including a Valentine's Quilt project in January and Traditional Hand Applique in February.
