July Stockist of the Month: The Quilting Bee

Owner Julie Roberts thought that running a quilt shop would be a nice quiet way to spend her retirement - how wrong she was! Three years on and the shop is thriving - sometimes even the customers get roped in to help out!

The Quilting Bee can be found in the lovely Craig Y Don area, just a stone's throw from the sea front among several other traditional independent retailers. Julie and her team love putting a smile on their customers faces and seeing them return to show their wonderful makes.

We caught up with Julie to find out more...

Tell us about the history of your shop and the team

The shop is set in the lovely Craig Y Don area a stone’s throw away from the sea front. The area is popular with tourists and is a sought after location for retirement. Craig Y Don has a number of independent retailers which are run in a traditional way – an ideal setting for a quilt shop.

I opened the shop in 2015 after retiring from a career of 34 years in banking. I had no intention of starting a business but as I was sadly widowed at an early age and was actively seeking ways to keep me out of trouble… opening a shop seemed like a good idea… a nice quiet setting, one or two customers coming in, coffee, cake and sewing throughout the day… how wrong could I have been! We are a busy thriving shop and it is absolutely great fun!

My “right hand man” Helen has been with me all the way and without her the shop would not have happened. To this day, I blame her for “planting the seed” but she is still not owning up to this!

I have a team of wonderful helpers and tutors who do a fantastic job… even the customers get roped into helping when it’s busy and I think they really enjoy that.

What do you offer that makes you stand out from other retailers?

We love what we do and we enjoy making our customers smile. We offer honest feedback and believe that this is appreciated by our customers.

There is nothing nicer than having a customer going out of the shop with a smile and having enjoyed their visit to The Quilting Bee and even better – coming back to the shop to show us the wonderful things they have made using the fabrics.

We offer an all-round service: fabrics, haberdashery, sewing machine sales, machine servicing, courses and workshops.

What are you passionate about?

Quality fabrics, quality notions, fantastic customer service and researching and learning about new products coming on the market.

How do you choose what you stock?

We choose fabrics we like and aim to have “something for everyone”. Our challenge is to make sure our customers go away happy having found that special fabric/product they came in for.

What do you love about quilting?

The process of quilting takes you to a very special place where you have no worries, no stress and endless hours of enjoyment. Very special indeed.

What project are you working on at the minute?

Planning 2020 workshops is a full time job. Seeking out something new and interesting is always a challenge but is exciting.

Are there any future plans you would like to share with us?

We are never short of ideas! We do need a larger premises and who knows what the future will bring! We plan to continue having lots of fun!
