We spoke to Marketing Manager Katy to find out more...

Tell us about the history of your shop and the team?
We’re an exciting, contemporary specialist patchwork & quilting shop based in Ross-On-Wye, Herefordshire. We’re a small but passionate team. Kim is the owner and captain of the ship, Katy is the Marketing Manager and Karen works with Kim in the shop and is our window merchandiser extraordinaire!
PWS opened in July 2017, and our website (www.thepatchworkshop.co.uk) went live at the beginning of this year. We stock a wide range of patchwork and quilting notions, tools and fabrics and also run regular workshops for both adults and children on all aspects of patchwork, quilting and sewing.
What do you offer that makes you stand out from other retailers?
We are not just a shop, we are creating a community around our shared passion for modern patchwork and quilting. Through our workshops, social media and newsletters, our customers can grow their skills, share ideas, inspiration and tips. It’s an inclusive and supportive environment, often fuelled by tea, cake, chocolate (the contents of our fridge are definitely not slimming club friendly) and lots of laughter!

What are you passionate about?
Inspiring others - including the younger generation - through patchwork and quilting. But also anything creative, especially if it involves sewing and beautiful fabric. We always say that ‘If we can make all our lovely customers leave with a smile on their face or in their heart, then we’ve done our job correctly.’
How do you choose what you stock?
We specialise in contemporary designer fabrics but they still have to tick three boxes: they have to bright, cheerful and fun!
What do you love about quilting?
We love the friends that you make through it and the meditative effect that it seems to have when you’ve been sewing for hours.  There’s a real thrill in cutting up lots of different fabrics and put them back together again to make a piece that’s truly unique.  Kim’s MacBook case, for example, is pretty much guaranteed to be the only one like it in the entire world (although we’re not sure the world is ready for another one).  The other thing with patchwork and quilting is that there really is no limit to what you can do or achieve; there is always something new to learn or skills to enhance.
What project are you working on at the minute?
Kim is hard at work practicing her FMQ skills and is mid-way through making a large wall hanging for her C&G Level 3 Patchwork and Quilting Certificate.  She is also making the Liberty Lavender Trail quilt with one of her lovely customers.  Then there’s all the samples to be made for the shop.  Katy seems to have disappeared under miles of pom-pom garlands. Not her normal sewing repertoire admittedly, but she and her two young girls were trying out our pom-pom makers and the girls have now insisted in pom-pom garlands everywhere!  Karen is also a highly creative potter and is practicing making lampshade bases to hold our home-made lampshades.
Are there any future plans you wish to share with us?
We have lots of exciting plans in the pipeline. Some of them are top secret (but very exciting!) but we do have some amazing workshops coming up including Lamp Shade making with Kim and Free Motion Embroidery with the delightful and oh-so-talented Richard Box.
